Tips for Improving HVAC Efficiency
Energy costs are rising — on a near-constant basis. We have many customers ask us how they can improve the energy efficiency inside their homes. That’s why A+ Heating & Air is providing some tips to improve the efficiency of your HVAC system here.
Do’s & Don’ts for Maximum Efficiency
Do Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures that your system is working effectively. It also allows technicians to determine if you’re having any issues with components that could lead to larger problems — and reduce efficiency! We recommend having your HVAC system check twice a year, during the spring and the fall.
At A+ Heating & Air, we can inspect every portion of your system and verify that everything is working correctly. We’ll also check those air filters to determine if they need to be replaced or cleaned!
Don’t Turn Off Your AC Unit
Most people assume that they should turn off their AC when they leave the house or are going to be gone for an extended period of time. This is actually a bad idea. When you turn your AC unit off, everything inside your property will heat up — including the furniture, carpets and walls. When you go to turn the AC back on, your system will have to work extra hard to cool the indoor air to comfortable levels, decreasing efficiency.
So, instead of turning off your air conditioner, leave it on and simply turn up the thermostat. Doing this will also help extend the lifespan of your system.
Do Keep the Filters Clean
If air filters need to be cleaned or replaced, then the air inside your property and the air handler can be extremely dirty. The latter decreases efficiency and can actually damage the HVAC system. The former can lead to poor indoor air quality.
Don’t Block Airflow
Many of us are trained to close doors when we’re not in a room, but this can actually decrease airflow — which may result in one room being too cold or warm. The same goes for vents. If you close doors and vents, you are allowing pressure to build up inside the ducts, which makes the system run less efficiently. Leaving everything open — or not closing vents to more than 10% of your space — can ensure air is distributed efficiently.
